Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd. has acquired Nova Scotia’s famed smoked fish producer, J. Willy Krauch & Sons.

Krauch & Sons recently closed its sole processing facility in Tangiers, and the Comeau group of companies saw this acquisition as a method of preserving a long standing tradition with a history not unlike their own.

In a news release, the Saulnierville firm said its founder, Bernardin J. Comeau, and Jorgen Willy Krauch were visionaries and pioneers.

They were both passionate about their work, meticulous about the quality of the product that bore their name, inspired by their community and family oriented, said the Comeau Sea Foods release.

Begun in 1946, Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd. is one of Canada’s leaders in the seafood industry. J. Willy Krauch & Sons shares a similar path, starting a mere 10 years after Comeau’s in 1956 and now has a world-famous reputation for its smoked fish products. Noël Després, CEO of Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd., said the pride and dedication of the two founding men continues today and this is one of the primary elements that supported the decision of proceeding with the acquisition of the Krauch & Sons brand.

‘We are thrilled about bringing the J. Willy Krauch & Sons Brand of smoked seafood products into the Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd., family of products,” said Després.

“Highly valued and immensely sought after, it remains one of the stalwart brands of products in Canada,” he said.

Comeau’s will continue to use the J. Willy Krauch & Sons Brand, a decision welcomed by Max Krauch, son of the company founder.

“We feel fortunate to have partners that share the same values as our own. Family and community have been at the forefront and an integral part of our business. Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd. will allow our goals to grow,” said Krauch.

As of Sept. 28, production of the J. Willy Krauch & Sons brand will solely be taking place at the Saulnierville branch of Comeau’s Sea Foods Ltd.

Krauch is providing hands-on experience during the transition period and is confident in his father’s company continued success.

Having Krauch oversee the new production of the products is an essential component to the transition process, said Després.

“We are fortunate to be able to count on Max Krauch’s knowledge and expertise in order to ensure that we meet the J. Willy Krauch & Sons Brand high quality and customer satisfaction with these products".
