The History of Comeau's Sea Foods Limited

The Comeau’s Sea Foods Limited group of companies has been a global leader in the seafood products industry for over fifty years.

Founded by Bernardin J. Comeau and Clarence Comeau in 1946, the company originated as an innovative substitute for the short Nova Scotia lobster season. As fishermen themselves, the founders were aware that fishing opportunities existed all year round – lobster in winter, herring in summer. Harvesting herring in summer also meant that quality bait could be produced to lure lobster later in the year.

That’s how it began – an idea to maximize year-round fishing resources that would leverage harvesting advantage and create new work for local people. A scallop fishery was added to the plan, and Comeau’s Sea Foods was born.

Over the last fifty years, Comeau’s Sea Foods has grown and developed, but its philosophy remains the same – managing ocean resources and technology in an efficient and sustainable manner.

Today, a variety of business activities serve loyal retail, foodservice, and industrial customers in the areas of harvesting, processing, bottling, and distributing of quality fish and food products. Fresh goods include scallops, herring, fishmeal and oil, and live lobster (November through May only).

The Comeau’s Sea Foods group also processes a full line of quality frozen herring fillets, scallops, and herring roe. Our value-added product lines include smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, saltfish, breaded scallops, spreads, seafood chowders and ready-to-eat items.

These and other Comeau’s Sea Foods products are available for export across North America and beyond. The company has built a logistics network across North America, Europe, and Asia since its first shipment to the West Indies in 1946. Satisfied customers now receive Comeau’s Sea Foods products directly or through distribution partners around the world.

Comeau’s Sea Foods’ longevity and continued success can be attributed to:

Ongoing interest in customer needs, tastes and market preferences
Clean and unpolluted purity of our local marine resources
Consistent development and infrastructure policy: Ensuring that the company retains its own licenses, vessels, operates its own testing facilities and processing plants, enables Comeau’s Sea Foods to provide consistent quality and supply to customers
Implementation of stringent quality practices and modern processing facilities that consistently meet or exceed Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulations and customers needs.
Loyal and dedicated employees that have served throughout Comeau’s Sea Foods’ history.
